Mailto Link Generator
Build a ready-to-use email link with recipients, CC, BCC, a subject, and a message in seconds.
This only prepares a draft; nothing is sent. Whether an email app opens depends on your device and browser settings.
This link is very long. Some email apps and browsers may not open links over about 2,000 characters.
What does this Mailto Link Generator do?
This tool builds a mailto link from the details you type in. Enter one or more recipients, add CC and BCC addresses if you need them, write an optional subject and message, and the tool combines everything into a single link. When someone opens that link, their email app starts a new draft with those fields already filled in. The tool checks every address for errors, encodes your subject and message so they survive inside a link, and gives you buttons to copy the result or open it in your email app. It only prepares a draft, so nothing is ever sent.
How to Create a Mailto Link Online
- Enter the recipient. Type at least one address in the To Email Address field. For several recipients, separate them with commas or semicolons.
- Add CC or BCC if needed. Both fields are optional and accept more than one address in the same way.
- Write a subject. This is optional. Leave it empty if you want the sender to choose their own.
- Write a message. This is also optional. Pressing Enter inside the message box creates a line break that carries over into the draft.
- Click Generate Mailto Link. The tool checks your addresses and, if everything is valid, shows the finished link in a result box. If something is wrong, a message under the field tells you which address to fix.
- Copy or open the link. Use Copy Link to paste it into your website, button, or document, or use Open Email App to see the draft straight away.
- Start over anytime. Reset clears every field and the result so you can build a different link.
Mailto Links with Multiple Recipients, CC and BCC
You are not limited to one address. Each of the To, CC, and BCC fields accepts a list, and you can separate the entries with commas or semicolons, whichever you prefer typing. When you generate the link, the tool removes duplicate addresses, ignoring differences in capital letters, and rewrites the list in each field as a tidy, comma-separated line.
CC and BCC only appear in the link when you fill them in. If those fields stay empty, the link stays short and clean, containing just the recipients and whatever subject or message you added.
Built-In Features
Multiple Recipients
Add several email addresses to To, CC, and BCC, separated by commas or semicolons. Duplicates are removed automatically to keep your recipient list clean and organized.
Address Validation
Every address is checked before the link is created. A clear message names the exact entry that is not valid, and it also flags stray commas or empty entries.
Automatic Encoding
Spaces, punctuation, and symbols in your subject and message are encoded for you, so the link works without any manual editing.
Line Break Support
Paragraphs and line breaks you type in the message box are preserved, so a pre-written note keeps its shape in the draft.
Copy, Open, or Reset
Copy the link in one click, open it directly in your email app to test the draft, or reset the form and begin a completely new link.
Long Link Warning
If your finished link runs past about 2,000 characters, a note warns you that some email apps and browsers may not open it.
How a Mailto Link Is Built
A mailto link starts with mailto: followed by the recipient. Anything extra, such as CC, BCC, a subject, or a message, goes after a question mark and is joined with ampersands. Because a link cannot contain raw spaces or line breaks, those values have to be percent-encoded. This is the part that most often breaks hand-written links, and it is what the tool handles for you. If you ever want to encode or inspect a piece of text yourself, our URL Encoder Decoder does exactly that.
Addresses
Recipients are joined with commas right after mailto:. CC and BCC addresses follow as their own parameters. The at sign stays readable in the link, so addresses look the way you expect.
Subject and Message
Your subject is trimmed of extra space at both ends, then encoded. The message is encoded as you wrote it, and each line break becomes a code that email apps read as a new line.
| Part of the Link | What It Does | How This Tool Handles It |
|---|---|---|
| mailto: | Sets the main recipients | Required. Multiple addresses are joined with commas |
| cc= | Adds visible copy recipients | Included only when the CC field has an address |
| bcc= | Adds hidden copy recipients | Included only when the BCC field has an address |
| subject= | Pre-fills the subject line | Trimmed, then encoded |
| body= | Pre-fills the message | Encoded, with line breaks kept as %0D%0A |
Only the fields you fill in end up in the link. An empty subject or message is simply left out instead of adding blank parameters.
How to Use a Mailto Link in HTML
Once you have copied your link, place it in the href attribute of an anchor tag. The visible text of the link is up to you.
The same link also works on a button, in a menu item, or in an email signature, anywhere that accepts a normal link. Some editors prefer the ampersand written as & inside an HTML attribute. Browsers accept both forms, so use whichever your editor expects. If you would like to share the same email address as a scannable code, you can paste the finished link into our QR Code Generator, though how a phone reacts to the scanned code depends on its camera app.
Mailto Link or Contact Form: Which Should You Choose?
A mailto link is the lightest way to let people email you. It needs no form, no server, and no plugin, but it relies on the visitor having an email app set up on their device. A contact form works for everyone with a browser, at the cost of more setup. The right choice depends on what you need.
| Situation | Better Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A simple Email Us link in a footer or article | Mailto link | Quick to add and needs no backend |
| A pre-filled subject for a specific topic | Mailto link | The draft opens with the topic already written |
| Visitors who may not have an email app set up | Contact form | A form does not depend on the visitor's device settings |
| Attachments or file uploads | Contact form | A mailto link cannot attach files |
A mailto link and a contact form can sit side by side. Many sites offer a form for new visitors and a mailto link for people who prefer to use their own email app.
Common Reasons to Create a Mailto Link
A Contact Link on Your Website
Add a clickable Email Us link to a footer, an about page, or a blog post without building a contact form.
Pre-Filled Enquiries
Set a subject such as Product question or Support request, so incoming messages arrive labeled and easier to sort.
Email Signatures and Buttons
Use the same link behind a button in a newsletter, a document, or an email signature so readers can reply in one click.
Offering Other Ways to Reach You
If your audience prefers chat apps, you can pair your email link with one from our WhatsApp Link Generator or Telegram Link Generator.
Useful Tips
Test Before Publishing
Click Open Email App once to confirm the draft looks right. Different email apps can display the same link slightly differently.
Keep the Message Short
A short opening line works better than a long script. Very long messages make the link long too, and some apps may not open it.
Remember Links Are Readable
Anyone can view the address inside a link on a public page, including BCC entries. Avoid putting private addresses in a link you publish publicly to protect your personal privacy.
If Nothing Opens
Whether a draft opens depends on your device, your browser, and which app is set as the default for email. Check that setting first before changing the link.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a mailto link?
A mailto link is a link that opens a new email draft in the default email app instead of opening a web page. It can pre-fill the recipients, CC, BCC, subject, and message.
How do I create a mailto link with a subject and message?
Enter the recipient, type your subject and message in their fields, then click Generate Mailto Link. The tool encodes the text and shows the finished link, which you can copy or open.
Can I add more than one recipient?
Yes. The To, CC, and BCC fields all accept several addresses separated by commas or semicolons. Duplicate addresses are removed when the link is generated.
How do I add line breaks to the message?
Just press Enter while typing in the message box. Each line break is converted into the code that email apps understand, so your paragraphs carry over into the draft.
Do I need to encode special characters myself?
No. Spaces, commas, symbols, and other special characters in your subject and message are encoded automatically when the link is generated.
Does this tool send the email?
No. The tool only prepares a link. When the link is opened, your email app creates a draft, and you still decide whether to send it.
Why does my mailto link not open an email app?
Whether a link opens an email app depends on your device and browser settings. If nothing happens, check that an email app or webmail service is set as the default handler for email links.
Is there a limit on how long a mailto link can be?
Email apps and browsers set their own limits. If your link goes beyond about 2,000 characters, the tool shows a note warning that some apps may not open it. Shortening the message usually solves this.
Can a mailto link include an attachment?
No. A mailto link can pre-fill recipients, a subject, and a message, but it cannot attach files. For attachments, a contact form with file upload is a better fit.
What happens if I change a field after generating the link?
The previous result is hidden as soon as you edit any field, so you never copy an outdated link by mistake. Click Generate Mailto Link again to create a fresh one.
Does the tool accept email addresses with international characters?
Yes. Letters and numbers from other languages are accepted in the validation check, along with the usual symbols allowed in email addresses.
Is my email information uploaded anywhere?
No. The link is built directly in your browser from the details you type in. The tool does not submit your addresses or message to a server.
Is this Mailto Link Generator free?
Yes. The tool is free to use and does not require an account or sign-up.
