Binary Translator
Convert text to binary code and read binary back as plain text instantly, right in your browser.
What Does This Binary Translator Do?
This binary translator converts plain text into binary code and turns binary code back into readable text. Type or paste your content, choose a direction, and the result appears in the output box without any extra steps. Each character is written as one or more groups of 8 digits, called bytes, separated by spaces, which is the usual way binary text is shared. The conversion happens inside your browser, so the text you enter stays on your device.
How to Use This Binary Translator?
- Choose a direction. Pick Text to Binary to encode a message, or Binary to Text to decode one. Switching tabs clears both boxes so you always start fresh.
- Enter your input. Type or paste into the input box. The placeholder shows a short example you can copy to see how the format looks.
- Read the result. The output box updates a moment after you stop typing. You can also click Convert to run the conversion right away.
- Fix any error message. If your binary contains a problem, a red message appears under the input box and tells you what to correct.
- Copy the output. Click Copy Output once a result is ready. The button changes to Copied! to confirm.
- Swap or clear. Use Swap to turn the current result into the next input and check it in the other direction, or click Clear to empty both boxes.
Binary Translator Features
Two Way Conversion
Switch between Text to Binary and Binary to Text easily with a single click on the tabs above the boxes for quick conversion.
Live Results
The output updates automatically shortly after you stop typing, so there is no need to press a button every time.
Swap to Double Check
Swap flips the mode and moves your result into the input box, which makes it easy to confirm the conversion works both ways.
Clear Error Messages
Invalid characters, incomplete bytes, and unreadable data are each reported with a plain message under the input box.
One Click Copy
Copy Output places the result on your clipboard and confirms it. If the browser blocks copying, a message asks you to copy the text manually.
Full UTF-8 Support
Accented letters, symbols, and emoji are handled correctly, not just the basic English alphabet across all languages.
How Text Becomes Binary Code
Computers store everything as numbers, and those numbers are stored as 0s and 1s. To turn a message into binary, every character is first matched to a number, then that number is written in base 2. This tool performs both steps for each byte in your text.
Characters Become Numbers
The text is encoded as UTF-8, which assigns each character one or more byte values between 0 and 255. A capital H, for example, is the number 72.
Numbers Become 8 Digits
Each byte is written as exactly 8 binary digits, with zeros added at the front when needed, and the bytes are joined with spaces.
Decoding follows the same path in reverse. Groups of 8 digits become numbers, and the numbers are read as UTF-8 text.
Binary Code for Letters, Numbers, and Symbols
If you only need a quick reference, the table below shows how some common characters look after conversion. Notice that the digit 1 as a character is not the same as the binary value 1, because the character has its own code.
| Character | Decimal Value | Binary |
|---|---|---|
| A | 65 | 01000001 |
| B | 66 | 01000010 |
| a | 97 | 01100001 |
| b | 98 | 01100010 |
| 0 | 48 | 00110000 |
| 1 | 49 | 00110001 |
| Space | 32 | 00100000 |
| ! | 33 | 00100001 |
Uppercase and lowercase letters differ by a single digit. A is 01000001 and a is 01100001, so changing the case of your text changes the binary output.
How to Read Binary Code by Hand
You do not need a tool to decode a short message. It only takes a little arithmetic, and knowing the method makes the results easier to trust.
- Split the code into bytes. Look at the digits in groups of 8, such as 01001000.
- Write the place values. From left to right, the 8 positions are worth 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, and 1.
- Add up the positions that hold a 1. In 01001000, the 1s sit under 64 and 8, so 64 + 8 gives 72.
- Look up the character. The value 72 stands for the capital letter H. Repeat for each byte to read the full message.
Doing this for a long message gets tedious quickly, which is exactly where a translator saves time.
Why Some Characters Need More Than 8 Digits
Many converters only handle the original English character set, so anything outside it breaks or returns question marks. This translator uses UTF-8, which is the encoding used by most of the web. Common English characters take one byte, while other characters take more.
| Character | Binary | Bytes |
|---|---|---|
| A | 01000001 | 1 |
| é | 11000011 10101001 | 2 |
| € | 11100010 10000010 10101100 | 3 |
| 😀 | 11110000 10011111 10011000 10000000 | 4 |
When you decode binary here, keep every byte of a multi-byte character together and in order. Removing or changing even one group can turn the character into an error or into something different.
Common Reasons to Convert Text to Binary
Learning How Computers Work
Seeing your own name or a favorite sentence turn into bytes is one of the clearest ways to understand how computers store text.
Decoding Binary Messages
Binary shows up in puzzles, scavenger hunts, and messages from friends. Paste it in and read it instantly instead of decoding it by hand.
Checking Homework
Students can convert a word both ways to confirm that their manual calculations are correct and avoid common conversion errors.
Creating Binary Text for Projects
Turn a phrase into binary for a caption, a poster, a greeting card, or a themed design, then copy it with one click.
Fixing Common Binary Translator Errors
When binary cannot be decoded, the tool tells you why instead of showing a blank result. Here is what each message means and how to solve it.
| What You See | Why It Happens | How to Fix It |
|---|---|---|
| Invalid character found | The input contains something other than 0, 1, or whitespace, such as a comma, a letter, or the number 2. | Remove the extra characters and keep only 0s and 1s. |
| Incomplete byte | A group has a digit count that is not a multiple of 8. | Add the missing digits or leading zeros so each byte has exactly 8 digits. |
| Not valid UTF-8 text | The bytes do not form readable text in UTF-8. | Check that no digits were lost or changed, and that the binary came from text. |
If you are not sure which tab you are in, check the label above the input box. It reads Text input or Binary input, so you can quickly see whether the tool expects text or binary.
Is Binary Code Secure?
Binary is a way of writing text, not a way of protecting it. Anyone with a translator can read it in seconds, so it should not be used to hide passwords or private messages. If you need to lock text with a key, try our Encrypt / Decrypt Text tool. If you want a one way fingerprint of text for checking integrity, the Hash Generator is the better fit.
Tips for Better Binary Translations
Verify With Swap
After converting, click Swap to send the result back through the opposite direction. If you get your original text, the conversion is correct.
Keep One Byte Per Group
Separating every 8 digit byte with a space makes long messages much easier to read and to troubleshoot when an error appears.
Set the Case First
Because capital and lowercase letters have different codes, adjust your text with the Case Converter if you need a specific style.
Other Kinds of Encoding
Preparing text for a web address is a different job. For that, use the URL Encoder Decoder instead of binary.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert text to binary online?
Make sure the Text to Binary tab is selected, then type or paste your text into the input box. The binary code appears in the output box after a short pause, or straight away if you click Convert. Use Copy Output to take the result with you.
How do I translate binary code to text?
Click the Binary to Text tab and paste your binary into the input box. Separate each 8 digit byte with a space, or paste the digits without spaces as long as they come in full groups of 8. The readable text appears in the output box.
What is Hello in binary?
Hello in binary is 01001000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111. Each of the five letters becomes its own 8 digit byte, and the capital H is different from a lowercase h.
What does 01001000 01101001 mean?
It spells Hi. The first byte, 01001000, equals 72 in decimal, which is the capital letter H. The second byte, 01101001, equals 105, which is the lowercase letter i.
Does the translator convert while I type?
Yes. Results update automatically a moment after you stop typing, so you do not have to press anything. The Convert button is there if you want the result immediately.
Can I paste binary without spaces?
Yes, as long as the total number of digits is a multiple of 8. The tool splits unbroken digits into bytes of 8 from the left. Spaces and line breaks between groups are also accepted.
Does it support emoji and accented letters?
Yes. Text is encoded as UTF-8, so accented letters, currency symbols, and emoji convert to binary and decode back correctly. Binary that you convert here will also decode properly when you paste it back in.
Why do some characters produce more than 8 digits?
Basic English letters, numbers, and common punctuation fit in a single byte. Characters such as é, €, or an emoji need two to four bytes in UTF-8, so they appear as two to four groups of 8 digits.
What happens to spaces and line breaks in my text?
They are converted like any other character. A space becomes 00100000 and a line break becomes 00001010.
What does the Swap button do?
Swap switches between Text to Binary and Binary to Text and moves the current output into the input box, so you can quickly check that your result converts back to the original. If there is no output yet or an error is showing, it simply switches the mode and leaves the input empty.
Why do I see an Incomplete byte error?
One of your groups has a number of digits that is not a multiple of 8. This usually happens when a digit was lost while copying or when leading zeros were removed. The message tells you which group is the problem.
What does the not valid UTF-8 message mean?
Your binary was accepted as 0s and 1s, but the bytes do not form valid UTF-8 text. This can happen with random binary, with data that was not created from text, or when a few digits are missing or changed.
Is binary code the same as encryption?
No. Binary is only another way of writing the same text, and anyone can convert it back with a tool like this one. It does not hide or protect your message.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using JavaScript, and the tool does not send your text anywhere.
Is there a limit on how much text I can convert?
The tool does not set a character limit. Very large inputs may take a little longer to process, depending on your device, and the tool waits slightly longer after you stop typing before converting them.
Does the binary translator work on mobile?
Yes. The layout adjusts to smaller screens, with the input and output boxes stacked one above the other, and all buttons work the same way as on desktop.
